A member of the US Women's National Team since 1993, Shannon MacMillan currently sits as the 2002 leading goal scorer with 13 goals in 14 games this year and has a total of 48 career goals in 138 matches in her illustrious career with the U.S. Women. She scored the first hat trick of her career against Mexico in the team's first match of the year, went scoreless in the first two games of the Four Nations Tournament in China, but since then has scored in six straight matches, including seven of the USA's eight goals at the Algarve Cup in Portugal. MacMillan's scoring spree has upped her international goal total to 48, good for sixth on the USA's all-time scoring list. A two-time Olympian, MacMillan helped bring the gold (1996) and silver (2000) medals home with Team USA. Affectionately known as "Mac", Shannon was also a key member of the 1999 Women's World Cup Championship squad when the US beat China in a battle ending in a penalty kicks.
Along with her WWC teammates, MacMillan is among the founding players of the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) that launched in 2001. Regarded as a marquee played for the San Diego Spirit, MacMillan lead her team in scoring 2002 with five goals and eight assists. The powerful forward was also chose to captain the South Team for the first-ever WUSA All-Star Game. MacMillan scored one goal and added two assists as she and her squad beat the North 6-1. In 2001, MacMillan was the second leading scorer for the WUSA with 12 goals and six assists in the inaugural season. During her college years at the University of Portland, Shannon accumulated multiple honors including winning the 1995 Missouri Athletic Club Award and the Hermann Trophy as college soccer's top player as a senior. A four-time All-American, Mac was also named the 1993 and 1995 University of Portland Female Athlete of the Year and in 1992 she finished her rookie year as the highest scoring freshman in the nation.
